Beginning this month, Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement a technical cooperation project. Under the “Strengthening Medical Education in Bhutan” project, JICA would provide experts, training and necessary equipment.

University’s president Dr KP Tshering said, “The project would enhance the quality of medical education to build the capacity of health care providers and strengthen sustainable health human resources development to improve health care service delivery.”

The expected output of the five-year project is to strengthen research and educational capacities of teachers for medical education.

Other expected outputs are fostering a supportive environment and improving the governance of medical education.

Upon completion of the project, the university aims to meet the expectation of being the research and training hub in the health sector. The university targets to achieve quality, self-sufficiency and sustainability in the development of health human resources in the country as well.

During the signing, Dr KP Tshering said that the highlight of the project is the digital transformation of medical education aligning with Digital Drukyul initiative.

For the project, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, Mongar Regional Referral Hospital and Gelephu Regional Referral Hospital are designated as teaching hospitals.

The minutes of the meeting signing was attended by officials from the university, health ministry and JICA.
