COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Meteorology Department has issued an extreme heat advisory as temperatures in several districts across the country were expected to rise further.

The Department, in a statement on Monday, cautioned the public to take appropriate precautions to avoid any health-related issues caused by severe heat condition. People in parts of capital Colombo and elsewhere in the south were warned to take extra precautions when out in the heat.

The Department warned that the situation would prevail until the beginning of the south-west monsoon in May. The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre forecast "extreme caution" levels for most of the Northern, North Central and the North Western provinces.
