COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan police have seized a large haul of drugs that were smuggled into the country from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Police officials said the narcotics -- heroin weighing over 170 kg along with 2,700 rounds of ammunition -- were seized from Colombo. The heroin was valued at an estimated $10 million.
Officials on Tuesday said this cache was one of the largest seized in the country after the large haul of 294 kg heroin in February. Security has since been tightened around the area.
Sri Lankan investigators, on President Maithripala Sirisena's instructions, have launched a severe crackdown on drug dealers and smugglers since the year began. Last month, Sirisena said he would impose the death penalty on convicted drug traffickers, after he vowed to free the country from the drug menace by 2020.
