In defense of the Bangali

To understand one part of Bangladesh, you need to understand all of it
Sometimes, when you’re sitting in the dirt and filth of Dhaka, listening to verbal and physical abuse around you, it’s difficult to understand how a people could allow themselves to fall this far.
How could people be so cruel, mean, blasé, how could they continue to not comprehend the extent to which they have failed to inhabit qualities which are deemed to be, for lack of a better word, “human?” Haven’t we progressed enough to leave this behind?
If you ever need to take a snapshot of Bangladeshi progress though, head on over to Mouchak mor. If you’re fortunate enough to be waiting for a bus instead of having your very own car, after having traversed through the mud-caked streets, tip-toeing on your only pair of shoes worth a damn, dodging debris and produce along the way, you will have a better view of it than anyone else.
As you pull yourself up on to the bus that has come through Shantinagar and Kakrail, going through similar terrain of flyover construction leftovers of metal and concrete, clambering down the wrong side of the street, almost knocking some poor bloke’s head off, you are greeted by the sweaty musk of your fellow citizens.
Hard work and perseverance, trapped inside a ramshackle tin bus. This is how far we’ve come.
