MALE: As the leadership of the Indian Ocean nation of atolls prepares to change hands, the Maldives Parliament voted to elect Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim as the new Speaker of the Parliament.
Gasim was elected to the post after Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed stepped down from the post.
Gasim received the backing of 62 lawmakers of the 80 lawmakers who had voted in a secret ballot to elect the Speaker. The new Speaker was nominated by President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and another lawmaker.
Outgoing Speaker Abdulla Mohamed handed over his resignation just hours before he was to face a no-confidence vote. His attempt to stay on in power was among defeated President Abdulla Yameen’s desperate efforts to retain power.
