President Ghani meets US special envoy on Afghan peace process

KABUL: Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Thursday to discuss latest efforts to broker a political resolution to the Afghan conflict.
Khalilzad, who came to Kabul from Islamabad, had met Taliban political representatives in Qatar last month. He briefed Ghani on his talks in countries in the region, focusing on peace and reconciliation of Afghanistan, the president’s office said in a statement.
In the meeting, at which Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah was present, Ghani said only joint peace efforts would help Afghans to achieve a lasting peace and end the long war and crisis.
