With the support of nearly two-third electoral votes in Parliament, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as the new Prime Minister of Nepal, 12 years after he was removed by King Gyanendra Shah. He becomes the 40th Prime Minister of Nepal.

Deuba received 388 out of 593 total votes while 170 votes were cast against his candidacy.

Deuba, 71, has received wide range of political support apart from main opposition, CPN-UML during the voting whose victory was almost sure after none of the political parties threw candidacy against him.

Faced with huge domestic political challenges, Deuba has a little bit leeway in foreign policy matters because outgoing Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda had almost brought relations with India and China almost back on track.

Immediately after his election, he said his priorities would be holding the local elections and constitution implementation. On foreign policy issue, he said he will maintain good relations to India and China.
