The proposed 20th amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution is a first step towards a dictatorship, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) said.

The party led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has invited all progressive forces in the country to set aside ideological differences and unite to protect the 19th amendment to the constitution.

In a statement issued yesterday, the SJB asserted that it would unconditionally partner with any party or group that wishes to safeguard and further strengthen the 19th amendment that is to be soon replaced by the 20th.
