Colombo: President of Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka MG Upul Rohana warned to take legal action against anyone who participated in the late Minister Arumugam Thondaman’s funeral, contracted COVID-19 and spreads the disease to the community nationally and internationally for violating the regulations of the Quarantine Act.
The official said the PHI union had received information that one of the organizers of the funeral had even threatened by telephone the Director General of Health Services, the competent authority of the Quarantine Act.
The union leader in a statement issued with his signature, requested the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to probe who has authorized some people to obstruct the duty of law-abiding public officials in addition to selling the body of a deceased person and begging for votes to seek political power and take appropriate action.
He said the entire country is aware that these people have blatantly violated all quarantine laws and health instructions and all opposition parties, professionals and all communities should rally against such violations when the country is still in danger.
He said that such unnecessary activities which further stress the frontline workers including the medical officers, public health inspectors, medical staff, health staff and hospital staff and others who have been working day and night since the COVID-19 outbreak began, set a wrong precedent for the country.
The PHI union President said this disgusting political campaign blatantly disregarding the sacrifices made by the health staff, other public sector and the public in the past few months, is a great disrespect to the deceased Minister Thondaman and pointed out that the wrong examples have reduced the commitment of the entire population to control this epidemic.
