Colombo: Large amounts of waste had washed ashore the Mount Lavinia beach on Thursday while municipal authorities await till curfew is lifted to clean the coastline.
Although waste being washed up during this season is common, residents claimed that the amount of waste washed up was significantly higher and mounds of plastic waste had also washed ashore.
“In the past, it is bamboo sticks and wooden sticks which would wash up during this season. However, a large amount of plastic has been washed up,” an area resident said.
When News 1st inquired from the Mayor of the Dehiwala- Mount Lavinia Municipal Council Stanley Dias he said, steps would be taken to clean the coastline once curfew is relaxed.
Meanwhile, a recent research has found that the beach nourishment project carried out on the beach stretch is a futile exercise.
