A discussion was held under the patronage of the State Minister of Batik, Handloom Fabrics and Local Apparel Products Dayasiri Jayasekara to increase the local garment production in Sri Lanka within the next five years.

Discussions were held with textile importers, yarn importers and entrepreneurs who manufacture products under local brand in Sri Lanka on developing the three sectors of textile manufacturing - batik production, local garment manufacturing and local handloom fabric production at the rural level in the next five years and increasing supply according to local demand.

Expressing his views, the Minister said that a program will be launched to create their own textiles in rural areas and to recruit 10,000 new employees for the production of handloom textiles. Accordingly 200 villages will be established and necessary equipment will be provided for this purpose.
