Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed to carry out PCR tests for COVID-19 on passengers at the airport upon arrival in the country and to direct them for quarantine.

“The President had instructed to direct passengers to a separate area until the results are released, before following the immigration procedure,” a release issued by the President’s Office said.

During a meeting with health officials, the President had highlighted the importance of carrying out PCR tests at the airport and releasing results immediately, as the pandemic may last for longer.

Officials had also discussed the possibility of conducting tests on passengers at their point of departure with the intervention of the governments of those respective countries.

The President had also stressed that Sri Lankan expatriates seeking to return to the country must be given an opportunity to fly back at the earliest.
