Male: Maldives Democratic Party’s President, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said MDP has succeeded in governing the country twice in the 15 years since its inception. The former president of Maldives made the statement in a tweet he published on the occasion of MDP's 15th anniversary.

The President of MDP is Speaker Nasheed. President Nasheed is one of the key founding members of MDP and has been the most popular leader of MDP over the past 15 years. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is a crucial leader of the party.

In his tweet, the former president said all opposition parties are divided. It appears that he referred to Dhivehi Rahyyithunge Party (DRP) that was formed at the same time as MDP and Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) which was formed by former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom. DRP is almost non-existent from the political platforms, and President Maumoom has not been part of PPM for several years.

President Maumoon later formed another political party known as ‘Maldives Reform Movement (MRM). President Maumoon and President Nasheed are long-time opponents. However, the two presidents worked together to bring the present administration in a coalition. Despite working as one alliance, they have not bonded much. Nasheed has continuously criticised Maumoon.

Nasheed noted that MDP ruled in the Maldives twice over the past 15 years. MDP won both the 2008 and 2018 presidential elections as part of a wider coalition. President Nasheed said in his greetings messages that MDP is the capable party of achieving things.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and senior officials of the party also sent greetings messages on the occasion of MDP’s 15th anniversary.
