Fuelled by the latest ban on export of onion by India, prices of the kitchen staple have soared rapidly in Bangladesh, driving homemakers to tears.

Homemakers rushed to the markets in Dhaka on Tuesday to buy the mineral-and vitamin-rich kitchen tastemaker by bulk fearing a further spike in the prices.

The retailers in the capital were asking for Tk 85 to Tk 100 a kg, up from Tk 60 a day ago.
