Male: With this discovery of the new COVID-19 cases in the Maldives capital Malé City on Wednesday afternoon, the case count of Maldivian patients has surpassed 100.

A total of 100 Maldivian patients are currently receiving treatment for the virus out of which all cases except one, was uncovered from the capital after the community transmission was detected.

Authorities have reported that a total of 104 Maldivians have tested positive to the deadly infection thus far out of which four have been released after recovery.

All four were tested positive in quarantine after returning from the United Kingdom. The remaining imported case of a Maldivian, 19, who returned from Philippines is still being treated.

Ever since the discovery of the community transmission on April 15, the number of confirmed cases has been increasing, with the total case count surpassing 200. While it has been two weeks since the community transmission was detected, up to 17 cases are being reported on a daily basis.

Further, the government had declared a lockdown across the Greater Malé Region on April 15, which was extended to another 24 hours on April 16 and then to a fortnight on April 17. On Wednesday, the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru extended it to another fortnight. The lockdown is to remain in effect until May 14.
