Aug 06, 2020

Sukhpreet Kahlon in a conversation with Prof. Ira Bhaskar about the famous Mughal-E-Azam that completed 60 years of its release on August 5, 2020. They discuss how Director  K Asif discovered the play, stories behind the casting of actors, and how the film is much more than a feud between a father and a son.

The film shows us a contrast of an India the film was released in (1960),  compared to the one we live in now. The conversation dwells on  how the movie deals with the freedom to love and marry, the role of the intellectual and the truly diverse culture of India that it needs to nurture.

Mughal-E-Azam was released on August 5, 1960, and is considered as one of the greatest films made in Indian cinema. Directed by K. Asif the film starred Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip Kumar as Prince Salim, Madhubala as Anarkali, and Durga Khote as Maharani Jodha Bai.
