The trial of people arrested in connection with recent attacks on the Hindu community, and their properties and shrines, in Bangladesh will be completed in the quickest possible time, Attorney General (AG) of Bangladesh AM Amin has said. Rana Dasgupta, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council (HBCUC), said the minorities suffered attacks in 27 districts between October 13-November 1. He said 117 temples or temporary shrines were vandalised and 301 homes and business establishments damaged during the attack.
The HBCUC announced it will hold a protest processions across the country on November 12 against attacks on the minority community, which started during the Durga Puja on October 13, UNI news agency said
An advisor to the Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson, Khandkar Abdul Muktadir, slammed the ruling Awami League for blaming the opposition BNP for communal violence in the country. He held the ruling party responsible for the increased persecution of Hindus, UNI said.
He said there was no discrimination between Hindus and Muslims in Bangladesh. "There is no communalism among us. Everyone, irrespective of their religion, participates in all festivals. This is the Bengali tradition. Our earlier generations used to do it, and now we are also doing the same. This consciousness is always present in our minds and souls. The BNP possesses it. So, those who say that BNP is carrying out communal violence are not only doing bad politics, they are mainly blaming others for achieving their own interests," Muktadir maintained.
Hindus comprise about 9 per cent of Bangladesh's 166 million population.
