As Bangladesh struggles to procure vaccines from India, officials informed the country would receive around 100,000 doses of Pfizer next month from the WHO’s Covax facility. 

“We will receive the vaccine doses under the Covax scheme by next month,” AVM Khurshid Alam, the director-general of Bangladesh health services, was quoted as saying by Dhaka Tribune. 

He also informed that the country is making all efforts to at least procure two million doses of vaccines from the Serum Institute of India (SII). The government had signed an agreement with the SII for the delivery of 30 million doses of vaccines. 

However, the SII failed to supply vaccines on time due to the prioritized domestic demand for the vaccines in India. 

Officials are also discussing plans to manufacture Russia’s Sputnik-V locally in Bangladesh. Alam said discussions over the potential co-production of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine had been going well.

 The authorities concerned, he said, would make an announcement if an agreement was signed.

Furthermore, China has also informed the Bangladesh government that they would donate 600,000 Covishield to the country.
