The establishment of an “inclusive, resilient, and prosperous society” in a safe and secured environment is the topmost priority of the Nepal government, said the country’s Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa.

Thapa was addressing the UN high-level debate on 'Urban Safety, Security and Good Governance: Making Crime Prevention a Priority for All'. In his pre-recorded video, he highlighted Nepal's efforts aimed at creating crime-free and safe cities. The state is committed to tackling the multifarious risks of violence, crime, insecurity, and social malpractices.

Nepal has focused on crime prevention and sustainable urban development through better coordination and cooperation among the three tiers of government in the federal structure. He said the government plans were in line with the country’s graduation from the Least Developed Country.

In his address, Thapa said the involvement of women, youth, and local communities in both urban development and crime prevention has remained at the center of our policies and programs.

He further called for strong international cooperation and partnership for the establishment of safe and resilient cities.

Good governance, he claimed, would only be achieved through reducing inequality and enhancing the participation of communities and stakeholders at the grass-root level.
