The Nepal government headed by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was on Wednesday reduced to a minority government after CPN-MC announced withdrawal of its support, reported The Himalayan Times.
The rivalry between Oli and Dahal has long been casting a shadow on the current government in Nepal. On Tuesday, in a meeting of the standing committee, Dahal’s CPN-MC decided to withdraw its support to the government.
An earlier decision by the country’s Supreme Court of nullifying the merger of the Nepal Communist Party ( NCP) had resulted in the revival of the CPN-UML headed by Oli and the CPN-MC led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The decision made Dahal’s party a default partner in the government.
The CPN-MC claimed PM Oli has been executing various unconstitutional moves and actions that went against the democratic values and beliefs, including the dissolution of the House of Representatives and issuing ordinance regarding the Constitutional Council.
The continuity of the current government, they claimed, could "endanger national security" and "democracy" in the country. The move came days after Oli announced seeking a trust vote in parliament on 10 May.
At a time when the country has been struggling to tackle the deadly second wave of the coronavirus, and its hospitals are struggling to cope with the caseload, the current political instability could further jeopardize its response (SAM)
