Police in India has arrested three Bangladeshi men from Kolkata for their alleged links with terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
The special task force (STF) of the Kolkata Police nabbed Naziur Rahman Pavel, 30, Mekail Khan, 30, and Rabiul Islam, 22, on Sunday.
The police are trying to find out if the trio had plans to carry out a terror attack in Kolkata, STF Joint Commissioner V Solomon Nesakumar said, adding, the suspects were living in a rented apartment at Haridevpur in the southern outskirts of Kolkata.
The troika used to pose as traders selling fruits and mosquito nets.
“Militant literature and documents seized from the suspects prove their links with JMB. Fake identity cards were also seized. There is a diary that contains the names of Islamic State (IS) leaders,” said the joint commissioner.
“We have scrutinized their social media profiles. There is proof of their links with JMB militants,” said STF Deputy Commissioner Aparajita Rai. “These men had links with Al Amin, the JMB leader based in Bangladesh,” she added.
The three had crossed into India early this year, according to The Tribune newspaper, which citing police sources added that several documents, including Jihadi materials, lists of JMB top leaders and their associates in other terror groups were seized from their possession.
Several JMB operatives including Indians were arrested from West Bengal in the past few years.
Citing terrorist acts, the Indian government in late May 2019 had banned the Islamist outfit, 14 years after Bangladesh did the same, Dhaka Tribune reported.
