UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), met Taliban’s second man and head of the group’s political office in Qatar. The UNAMA said on Monday that Deborah Lyons in meeting with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, emphasized a “just and inclusive” peace in Afghanistan.

The meeting took place Sunday in the Qatari capital of Doha city, according to UNAMA, where the first round of the intra-Afghan talks is also planned to be held.

Suhail Shahin, Spokesman for the Taliban’s Political Office, said that the meeting discussed prisoner exchange between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban as well as the intra-Afghan negotiations.

The meeting comes one day after the UNAMA accused the Taliban of deliberate attacks during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The UNAMA said in a report that the Taliban continued kidnapping of healthcare workers during the epidemic outbreak and attacked a drug store.

The report also mentions an armed attack on a maternity hospital in Kabul’s neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi on May 12 that killed 14 pregnant women and newborn babies. The Daesh terrorist attack claimed responsibility for the hospital attack.
