An Indian study has found that only 0.06 per cent of people need hospitalization after Covid vaccination and 97.38 per cent of those vaccinated were protected from the virus, media reports said.
Indraprastha Apollo Hospital revealed the results of the study to evaluate the frequency of 'Break Through Infection' (infections after the vaccination) of COVID-19.
The study was conducted on healthcare workers who reported to Delhi's Indraprastha Apollo Hospital with symptomatic COVID-19, during the first 100 days of the vaccination drive using the AstraZeneca-Covishield vaccine, India Today said.
The findings are currently under consideration for publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal, the magazine reported.
Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals Group, Dr. Anupam Sibal, told news agency ANI, "India has witnessed a huge increase in cases in the second wave of COVID-19 recently, amidst the vaccination drive that is in progress. There have been reports of infections after the vaccination, which are also known as Breakthrough Infections. These infections may occur after partial and full vaccination in some individuals."
Meanwhile, India's Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday said India will procure 2.6 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses by the end of this year and will be in a position to inoculate the entire adult population of the country.
He said the government is making all efforts to enhance production and supply of existing vaccines.
"Govt led by Hon'ble PM Sh@narendramodi Ji is leaving no stone unturned to support development of new #COVID19Vaccines & enhancing production & supply of existing ones. By end of this year, we shall have enough doses for our entire adult population," Harsh Vardhan said.
The government said a person can take COVID-19 vaccine shot three months after recovering from the disease.
"The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) has shared fresh recommendations regarding COVID-19 vaccination with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. These recommendations have been based on the evolving situation of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging global scientific evidence & experience," read the statement.
