Despite a high number of Covid cases across India, less than 2 per cent of the country's population of 1.36 million has been affected so far, the Indian government has said.

"Despite the high number of cases reported so far, we have been able to contain the spread to under 2% of the population. We can not let our guards down, hence continued focus on containment is critical," Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said at a media briefing.

"India has witnessed a consistent upward trend in weekly tests since mid-February with average daily tests more than 2.5 times in last 14 weeks," Agarwal said.

The government said that only 1.8 per cent of the total population of India has been affected by the virus.

However, it mentioned that over 98 per cent of the population is still susceptible or vulnerable to contract the virus.

Meanwhile, the government noted that India has recorded daily recoveries of more than 400,000 Covid patients in a single day for the first time.

Average Daily Recovery of more than 355,944 cases has been recorded in the last 14 days, said the government.

Eight states have more than 100,000 active cases and 22 states have more than 15 per cent case positivity, the Centre said.

States and Union territories like Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Delhi have shown a decline in the cases and positivity, IBNS said.
