A year on, Nepal is yet to resume its outbound postal services

A year on since the pandemic hit the world, services and businesses are slowly returning to normalcy. But the outbound postal services in Nepal, which had stopped in March last year, are yet to start their operations.
“Our agreement was with Thai Airways so when everything came to a halt we were unable to continue our outbound service,” Pradyumna Prasad Upadhyay, the chief postmaster at the General Post Office, was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post.
The airline has gone bankrupt now, and no more flying international flights. The contract that the Nepal government had signed with the Thai airways, was through international bidding, and revoking that won’t be easy.
As Nepal receives a very limited number of international flights, it relies on passenger flights, instead of cargo flights, for postal services. Finding another bidder for the same won’t be easy presently.
“We also need to look into connecting flights, ground entries, and transits of airways to make such agreements, said Aabha Shrestha Karna, the director-general at Nepal’s Postal Services Department.
He, however, acknowledged that they are losing people’s trust and also the revenue they used to earn from these services. Presently, the department provides services only for India.
