London Eye, the world’s largest cantilever observation wheel centrally located in the heart of London, was lit up in red and green on Friday, marking the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence.
"In celebration of the 50th anniversary of independence, the iconic London Eye was illuminated in the colors of Bangladesh's flag,” Abdal Ullah, Trustee of the British Bangladesh Power and Inspiration (BBPI) Foundation, was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
As Bangladesh celebrates the occasion in the country, its large diaspora organized special events on the day.
“Tonight, we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives and thank all NHS and other frontline staff, particularly those from minority ethnic groups who serve selflessly despite the increased personal risks," said Ayesha Qureshi, Trustee of BBPI Foundation. The community, she said has suffered disproportionately from the Covid-19, she said.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in his letter to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had also mentioned the contribution of Bangladeshi health workers in the UK in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis.
BBPI, a group of British-Bangladeshi students and young professionals, celebrates the British Bangladeshi community's success in the UK.
BBPI has collaborated with partners to light iconic buildings around the UK and beyond, including Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Birmingham Central Library, Manchester Central Library, Northampton University, Cardiff Castle and City Hall, Toronto.
