New Delhi: Even as US President Donald Trump was in the Indian capital, parts of working-class and crowded areas of the northeast edges of Delhi was rocked by sectarian violence leaving at least eight people dead, media reports said.

Reporters at the spot witnessed Hindu mobs throwing stones and petrol bombs at Muslim homes across the road in Kabir Nagar, near Maujpur, scroll.in said. Journalists were also attacked and many forced to delete pictures and videos from their phones. NDTV said at least two of their journalists were badly beaten up.

More than 150 people were injured.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the police have been outnumbered and were unable to take action since they did not have the orders to do so. Under the dual control of the capital, law and order comes under the federal government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose trusted aide Amit Shah is the Home Minister who directly controlled Delhi Police.

The Supreme Court and Delhi High Court will both hear pleas on the violence on Wednesday which began after a local politician, belonging to PM Modi's ruling BJP, allegedly instigated mobs against Muslim groups that had been protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act and demanding its repeal.

Trump was to leave India later tonight after a state banquet at the end of his two-day official visit.
