A special petition has been filed in the Supreme Court yesterday (22nd) seeking a ruling that the ‘20th Amendment to the Constitution’ Bill is unconstitutional and that it should be passed by a two-thirds majority in Parliament and a public referendum.

The petition was filed by Indika Gallage, a lawyer residing in the Morontuduwa area through Attorney-at-Law Darshana Weraduwage. The Attorney General has been named as the respondent in the petition.

The petitioner has pointed out that several clauses of the Bill which was tabled in Parliament Tuesday (22) have removed several provisions of the Constitution and it is essential to hold a referendum and obtain the consent of the people to remove or change such provisions affecting the sovereignty of the people.
