Over 6600 people have been killed in Afghanistan last month, making June the deadliest month in the two decades of the conflict, according to an estimate by local media. The Afghan government claimed over 6000 Taliban fighters were killed in the fighting, mostly in the country’s north.
Around 638 military personnel and civilians have been killed during the same period, TOLOnews reported. Afghan security forces evacuated over 120 districts; most have been captured by the Taliban in the last two months.
Since 1 May, the Taliban has intensified its attacks on security forces and ran over most districts in Afghanistan’s northern areas.
Although targeted assassinations and explosions came down significantly during the period, the Taliban’s attacks in cities have risen.
The majority of casualties were reported in Baghlan, Faryab, Badakhshan, Ghazni, Takhar, Balkh, Ghor, Herat, Farah, Kunduz, Badghis, and Sar-e-Pul provinces.
Additionally, there is a growing concern howlong the Afghan security forces will be able to fight this guerilla war staged by the Taliban.
“There was no preparation to confront such a big war, we weren’t prepared for guerrilla warfare,” Afghan MP Arif Rahmani was quoted as saying by TOLOnews. Those who knew this kind of war ( field commanders from the 90s) have been sent home (retired) by the government, he said.
