At least five people, four of them doctors, were killed and two wounded in an IED explosion on Sunday morning in the capital Kabul in Afghanistan, TOLOnews reported. Kabul has witnessed around 60 security-related incidents in the past two months.
The bombing targeted a car carrying doctors around 7:30 in the morning, Kabul police confirmed the incident but didn’t provide any additional information on victims identities. The incident occurred in police district 7 of the capital.
Dr. Nazifa Ibrahim, a lady doctor and the acting head of the health directorate of the prisoners’ affairs authority is also among the dead, reports say.
Ross Wilson, the US chargé d'affaires in Afghanistan, condemned the killing of doctors, and tweeted: “It is shocking to learn of the deaths of Office of the Prison Administration doctors, who work tirelessly each day to save vulnerable lives, especially during a pandemic when frontline medical personnel are desperately needed.”
So far, no group has taken responsibility for the attack. The country has witnessed a dramatic rise in targeted assassinations ever since the Taliban and the Afghan government entered into the intra-Afghan dialogue in Doha, Qatar.
Just a day earlier, on Monday, a journalist was also killed in a targeted assassination. Prior to that an Afghan MP narrowly escaped a magnetic IED explosion. These targeted attacks often go unclaimed for some months now.
