At least 17 people were killed and 50 wounded in twin magnetic IED blasts in central Bamiyan province of Afghanistan, Tolonews reported. The bombings were the first of this kind in Bamiyan in the last 20 years of Taliban insurgency.
The bombs exploded in the main market area of the provincial city of Bamiyan Tuesday evening. No group has yet taken the responsibility for the attacks.
Bamiyan, a central province, inhabited mostly by Shia Hazaras, is considered one of the most secure provinces in Afghanistan. Despite years of attempts by the Taliban, Bamiyan and another province, Panjshir, remain untouched by Taliban influence.
Experts believe the attack could be the handiwork of ISIS which has been targetting Shia Hazaras through suicide bombings for some time. Last month's attack on a Kabul educational centre which killed around 22 people, mostly Hazaras, was also planned by the group.
