A key militant of the banned Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) outfit has been arrested, a police official said.

During interrogation, Aminul Islam confessed that ABT militants were involved in a conspiracy to destabilize the country by killing people in top positions of the state and destroying important installations.

Legal action has been taken against him following his arrest on Wednesday night, the Bangladesh Police official told IANS.

Aminul also exposed present activities of the banned militant outfit and about his membership in the ABT to the officials of the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), a special unit of Bangladesh Police.

Aminul hails from Dokkhin Para area in Araihajar upazila of Narayanganj.

According to the police, he used to run a Facebook page under an ID called 'Ghumonto Shardul'.

‘Shardul' an Arabic word means ‘strong fierce carnivore' and ‘Ghumonto Shardul' literally translates to a ‘sleeping fierce carnivore'.

Aminul believed in the establishment of an ‘Islamic caliphate' at any cost through militant activities.

A mobile phone, a huge number of radical books, and documents related to the ABT were recovered from him.

"ABT used to spread their extremist views in various ways, including social media platforms. Aminul was the group admin of the Facebook page" ATU Superintendent of Police (SP) Aslam Khan told IANS.

Facebook authorities earlier blocked ABT account, after which Aminul started a new page under 'Ghumonto Shardul' ID and continued the "extremism campaign", he said.

Aminul was trying to destroy the peace and order in Bangladesh, the SP added.(IANS)
