At least five coal-based power plant workers were killed and 15 injured during a clash with police in Chattogram's Banshkhali area on Sunday morning, media reports said.
Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.
The dead workers were identified as as Rony of Chuadanga, Md Rahad of Kishoreganj, Shuvo of Narsingdi, Mahmud Reza of Banshkhali.
Raihan from Noakhali was the other deceased.
The DIG said workers of the power plant at Banshkhali's Gandamara have been demonstrating since Friday over their dues.
A meeting had been held over the issue, but the workers got agitated and attacked the power plant during one point of their demonstration, he said.
The police came under attack and retaliated. Three police personnel were injured.
Locals said the workers have been agitating for a four-point demand including payment of overdue salary, half day work on Friday, giving time for Iftar and a hike in salary.
