The third Bhutan–India High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) committee meeting between India and Bhutan for the 12th Plan approved 110 projects worth Nu 1.732 billion in Thimphu yesterday. The projects cover urban infrastructure, farm roads, irrigation channels, bridges, health and education infrastructure, RNR Infrastructure and entrepreneurial skills development.
A press release from the foreign ministry stated that these projects would create economic opportunities for the rural communities and contribute to improved livelihoods, job opportunities and food security.
“These projects are also timely as they will provide a boost to the economy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic,” the press release stated.
Bilateral department director Sonam Tobgay led the Bhutanese delegation comprising of officials from the Gross National Happiness Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance. The GoI delegation was led by Sameer D Akolkar, Second Secretary, Embassy of India in Thimphu.
Of the Nu 8.5 billion committed for HICDP/SDP in the 12th Plan, the GoI has approved Nu 7.469 billion for the first three batches of the project.
So far, Bhutan received Nu 2.83 billion which amounts to 33.297 percent of the total fund committed as on April 27. “All projects are progressing as per the schedule of the 12th Plan,” the press release stated.
The leader of the Indian delegation conveyed the assurance of the Government of India, to release in a timely manner all required funds to ensure smooth implementation of the projects, the press release stated.
The leader of the Bhutanese delegation thanked the Indian government for their continued goodwill, cooperation and support.
