IT sector booms amid COVID-19 disruption in Bhutan

Addressing the virtual International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Bhutan’s Information and Communication Minister Lyonpo Karma Donnenwangi hailed the expansion of the country’s online systems amid the COVID-19 pandemic, thekuensel.com reported.

Bhutan adopted the country’s e-government policy in 2018, which enabled the government to provide various government services under the e-governance initiatives. The minister said, “Despite being a landlocked country, Bhutan has made significant achievements in the field of ICT.” 

Highlighting roles of the country’s IT infrastructure in tackling the pandemic, the minister said Druk Trace App checkpost management system, quarantine management, and security system all have enhanced the government efficiency in these challenging time. 

Lyonpo said the government’s e-governance policy will fully leverage the existing and emerging information and communications technologies.
