The Maldives parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of four ambassadors to four countries, and the appointment of a permanent representative to the UN mission in Geneva.

The parliament approved to appoint Shiruzimath Sameer as the Maldivian Ambassador to Bangladesh with 68 members voting in her favour. Faruzana Zahir was approved for appointment as the Ambassador of Maldives to Pakistan with the votes of 70 lawmakers. 70 members voted in favour of appointing Aminath Shabeena as Maldivian Ambassador to UAE, while Dr. Hussain Niyaz received an equal number of votes for his appointment as the Maldivian ambassador to India, and non-resident ambassador to Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan. 70 members also voted in favour of appointing Dr. Asim Ahmed as Permanent Representative to the UN mission in Geneva, Switzerland. No members voted against any of the nominations.

Following the vote, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said the ratio of male and female diplomats stationed abroad are now equal.
