India reported 103,558 new cases in the past 24 hours, marking a massive spike in the daily count of COVID-19 cases, as per the Ministry of Health released data Monday. This is the first time India recorded over 1 lakh (100,000) cases in a period of 24 hours this year.
The country also recorded 478 deaths during the same period, taking the death toll to 165101, India Blooms reported.
There are 741,830 active cases in the country at present.
Maharashtra on Sunday reported 57,074 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the outbreak of the virus, taking the total number of infections in the state to 30,10,597, the state health department said. Besides, 222 more deaths taking the death toll to 55,878 from the disease in the western state whose capital is Mumbai.
In view of rising cases, the state government on Sunday issued orders to impose strict restrictions in daytime, night curfew and weekend lockdown across the state, giving exemption to industries, transport and emergency services. Maharashtra has been the most affected state in the country.
