Speaking at the 2020 Paris Peace Forum, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamad Solihsought support from the international community for small island nations that have been adversely affected by COVID 19 crisis, reported edition.mv.

Highlighting the unique challenges that the Maldives, a small and tourism reliant country, has been facing due to the global lockdown caused by the pandemic, President Solih pitched for assistance in the form of finance, debt relief, and technical assistance.

President Solih noted how the global lockdown imposed in response to the pandemic damaged the country’s tourism-dependent economy and said the full recovery would take some time and require coordinated global actions.

"In today’s world, the effects of crises cannot be confined to borders; and they cannot be resolved without collective action", the President was quoted by edition.mv as saying.

Solih, highlighting the vulnerabilities of small island nations, also called for establishing a global order that would be just and beneficial to all nations.
