The Maldives on Thursday reported the highest-ever single-day surge in Covid-19 cases, crossing the 2100 mark. Around 1700 cases alone came from its capital Male.
The archipelago, known globally for its pristine beaches and luxurious island resorts that are a high-end holiday destination for global jetsetters, has been facing the fourth Covid-19 wave this year. In all earlier waves, its daily infection count rarely touched 500, however, in the last month alone, it reported over 1000 cases on average daily.
On Thursday, it recorded 2194 Covid-19 cases. It tested over 7200 samples on the same day.
The number of active case count remained around 20,000 and the total number of infections in the Maldives crossed the 50,000 mark.
Health safety measures have been increased across the country. The Health Protection Agency (HPA)- the main body that manages the Covid crisis in the country- has asked civil servants and other employees to work from home if possible.
The country has been under health emergency since last year.
