Mayors from the 17 municipalities of Kathmandu Valley have called the central and the provincial governments in Nepal to put stringent measures to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Kathmandu Post reported.

With the major festive season over, the valley has been witnessing a rise in the cases of coronavirus infection. The mayors have now requested authorities to put strict measures to break the transmission chain of the virus.

Earlier, the forum of mayors had called for major restrictions in all the entry points of the valley and even requested the central government to deploy the army, if needed.

Earlier, the forum, in the second week of September, had asked the government not to ease restrictions; but their demands were ignored.

“Now it’s inevitable to break the chain of Covid-19, and we have put forth our demands to the government for making a wise decision to save Kathmandu Valley and its people,” said Madhyapur Thimi Mayor Madan Sundar Shrestha, also the secretary of the Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum, after attending a meeting of the Corona Crisis Management Centre on Tuesday.

The cases from Kathmandu valley alone account for nearly 60 percent of the total nationwide infections. With Chhat and other festivals that increased mobility in market places recently, new infections are expected to rise again.
