Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, along with his wife Fazna Ahmed, is on an unofficial visit to Sri Lanka, the Office of the President said in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement also added the couple will be back by Friday. Government offices in the archipelago are currently on a 16-day holiday on the occasion of Eid and the upcoming Independence day celebration.
Solih had just concluded a three-island official tour of South-Thiladhunmathi atoll of the country on Sunday as the tension in the ruling party continues to rise. Solih and former president Nasheed, the two senior leaders of the ruling MDP, are at the loggerhead for some weeks now.
Other small parties in the ruling coalition have extended their weight behind Solih, accusing Nasheed of scoring self goals and threatening the stability of the government. Nasheed is currently in Germany where he has been recovering after escaping an assassination bid on 6 May.
