Sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan speaks with Mayank Chhaya on his life in music | SAM Conversation
Considered the greatest living exponent of the sarod, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has been playing the instrument since the age of six. At 77, he has played the sarod now for over seven decades and continues to produce some astonishing work.
Known for his ingenious interpretations of ragas, what sets Khan apart from other musicians is that he regards the audience as the “soul” of his motivation.
That makes him a remarkably accessible virtuoso, who while maintaining the highest standards of musical excellence, also remains humble.
After seven decades the sarod has become an extension of his being as well as a bridge to his personal spiritual bliss. Since 1974, Khan has created over 20 ragas of his own which lend his legacy a remarkable creative heft.
Self-effacing to a fault, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan spoke to Mayank Chhaya Reports during a visit to Chicago.
