Many members of the former parliament including the former Prime Minister and leader of the United National Party (UNP) lost their seats in Sri Lanka’s 2020 parliamentary election held on Wednesday. UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Ravi Karunanayake and Treasurer Daya Gamage who contested from the Colombo District lost their seats this time.
AHM Fowzie, Hirunika Premachandra, and Sujeewa Senasinghe who contested under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Thilanga Sumathipala who contested under the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) from the Colombo District lost their seats.
In Gampaha District Dulip Wijesekara who contested under the SLPP, Arjuna Ranatunga and Ruwan Wijewardene who contested from the UNP, Edward Gunasekara, Chathura Senaratne, Ajith Mannapperuma and Vijith Vijayamuni de Zoysa who contested under the SJB also did not get elected this time.
General Secretary of UNP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam who contested from the Kurunegala District was defeated this time while TB Ekanayake, Taranath Basnayake and SB Navinne who contested under the SLPP were also defeated. Indika Bandaranaike, who contested under the SJB, has also lost his seat.
