Maldives’ former president Mohammed Nasheed, who escaped an assassination attempt last week, has on Thursday departed for Germany to seek further medical treatment there, reported Raajje TV.

He was discharged from a hospital in Male today and was stable. However, his further treatment will be done in Germany. The trip was arranged by the Maldives foreign ministry in cooperation with Germany’s foreign ministry.

Eva Abdullah, the deputy speaker in parliament, shared a video on Twitter where Nasheed can be seen escorted to aircraft amid heavy security. She said Nasheed was responding well to treatment and even started taking liquids.

Last week on Saturday, an IED bomb, strapped to a motorcycle parked near his car, exploded just outside his home, leaving him and two of his bodyguards severely wounded. Thereafter, he had gone through 16 surgeries in a hospital in Male.

Authorities have so far arrested three people suspected to be involved in the bombing. Furthermore, Australian Federal Police has been assisting the Maldives Police to investigate the case.

Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, the archipelago’s president, has ordered an audit of the entire security apparatus of the country.
