Authorities in the Maldives have beefed up security at the archipelago’s parliament building after security agencies in the country sounded alert over a possible attack. The alert over possible threat came at a time when the second session of parliament is already underway.
Maldives National Defense Forces informed on Tuesday that authorities had received an intel alert regarding a possible attack on the parliament building, reported Raajje TV. The forces have increased security in and around the building thereafter.
The alert came after a man, though a Facebook post, threatened to blow up parliament, he informed.
The country’s security agencies, which are already in alert mode since the failed assassination bid on former president Mohammed Nasheed, swung into action as soon they got inputs.
Also, the threat came when the parliament is debating an emergency motion regarding the assassination bid on Nasheed. The Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih has already ordered a revamp of the country’s security apparatus after it failed to foil the attack on Nasheed.
Nasheed, considered the champion of democracy in the archipelago, is currently in Germany, seeking advanced treatment there. He is out of danger now.
