The regional carrier of Singapore Airlines, Silk Air, resumed its flight operations to the Maldives and are now operating two flights every week to the Maldives’s Velana International Airport, reported Edition news.

The move is a result of the government’s continuous efforts of promoting the country as a safe and secure destination for international tourists. The Maldives’ Tourism Minister Abdullah Masoom had announced earlier that more airlines would start their operations to the country in the coming weeks.

The first flight of Silk Air, after the reopening of the country, landed at Velana Internationa Airport on 3 December. “@silkair is back with us today and will be flying twice weekly,” reads a tweet from the official handle of the airport.

COVID-19 restrictions had derailed the country’s tourism sector which contributes to the nation’s economy immensely.  The Indian Ocean archipelago was the worst-hit economy in the South Asian region.

The country reopened its border on 15 July this year and since then it has gradually eased restrictions to revive the industry. To attract foreign tourists, the government introduced a slew of measures; offering short-term health insurances and launching promotional campaigns in major potential markets.

The efforts are now paying off as the industry has been showing signs of a gradual but steady revival.
