The number of tourists who visited the Maldives over the past three months has surpassed 300,000. According to statistics issued by the Tourism Ministry around 307,543 tourists visited the Maldives from the beginning of the year until April 3.

India tops the list of attracting the most number of tourists visiting the archipelago, known for its exquisite white sandy beaches, turquoise blue sea, beautiful reefs, and incredible underwater marine life. Russia follows close behind. Ukraine is third on the list, according to Avas.mv.

Tourists who visit the Maldives spend an average of 8.9 days in the Maldives.

The Maldives hosted 555,494 tourists in 2020, and 1.7 million tourists in 2019. The government hopes to host 1.5 million tourists this year.

The Indian Ocean nation, which has virtually no domestic economy and depends entirely on tourism, was brought to a standstill due to lockdowns around the world to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Maldives decided to reopen for tourism in July 2020 by following all the prescribed World Health Organisation (WHO) norms. The Maldives had closed its border in March 27, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
