Nepal opposition vows to counter legally and politically dissolution of parliament

Describing the Friday midnight dissolution of parliament as "unconstitutional" and "undemocratic", leaders of Nepal’s opposition alliance have vowed to take every possible legal and political step to counter the step taken by Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

In a joint statement issued at the end of a meeting convened on Saturday, the leaders expressed their commitment to unitedly defend the constitutional rights of Nepali citizens achieved at the end of years of political struggle.

They made an appeal to all political and civil forces to condemn and stand against the Oli-Bhandari duo's ‘regressive, autocratic’ intentions.

The statement was signed by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN- Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, a senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairperson of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal Upendra Yadav and Vice-Chairman of Rastriya Janamorcha Durga Paudel.

They accused the prime minister and the president of ‘acting irresponsibly’ at a time when the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic was rampant, adding to the prevailing uncertainty.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the opposition alliance is devising a strategy to approach the Supreme Court with all its lawmakers on Sunday, demanding to scrap of the government's decision.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari, on Friday-Saturday midnight, dissolved the House of Representatives complying with the Cabinet's recommendation.

She has called fresh elections on November 12 and November 19.
