Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has decided to seek a vote of confidence for the first time since the country’s apex court reinstated the lower house of parliament earlier this year. 

In a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Oli announced his decision. The move came after the months-long efforts of opposition parties there have failed to form a consensus to dislodge Oli. The government has decided to call the monsoon session of the house on 10 May. The Himalayan Times said.  

Oli, who had first seen the revolt by his then-party colleague and rival former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, was relieved a bit when the country’s Supreme Court nullified the merger of the communist factions. 

The apex court decision resuscitated CPN-MC, led Dahal, and CPN-UML headed by Oli. The move weakened the political strength of Dahal. 

Further efforts to challenge Oli failed as opposition parties failed to reach a consensus to form the next government. Janta Samajwadi Party (JSP), one of the opposition parties, kept negotiating deals with Oli, further weakening the opposition attempt to oust Oli. 

Dahal led CPN-MC refused to bring a no-confidence motion against Oli unless the JSP committed to supporting the next government. (SAM)
