The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the main opposition party in Pakistan, has rejected the proposal of the government to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) for elections, reported The Express Tribune. 

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has pushed the idea of using EVMs to check electoral frauds. However, Shahbaaz Sharif, the president of the PML-N, said such crucial decisions can’t be made by one individual. 

"Crucial national steps do not take place on the aspirations or order of one individual,” he was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune. "The sensitive process of electoral reforms is undertaken with the will and confidence of the entirety of the nation," he added.

He further said, "The reforms come to fore through consultation between all the sides involved and in the light of the masses' opinion and unanimity."

Reminding the electoral reforms taken during the earlier PML-N government, he said the PML-N had taken those reforms with consultations with all parties, including the PTI, the current ruling party. 

"No one had objected to those reforms as it was a reflection of endorsement by all," he said, adding further "the opposition was mocked by chants of NRO as it attempted to introduce the charter of the economy and [other] positive propositions."

Lately, many recent elections and by-elections in Pakistan drew criticism from both, the ruling party as well as opposition parties. It is then only Imran Khan pressed on the idea of using EVMs.

Last Friday the country’s election commission declared the Pakistan Peoples Party victorious in the NA-249 Karachi by-poll. Almost all major parties contesting the seat said they would challenge the results.
